I still live in Detroit on the upper east side. What I find amazing is, on these blocks with burned out boarded up homes, the state is putting in new sidewalks at every corner with handicapped ramps! Why can't they reappropriate the money to tearing down the abandoned homes?!

People in wheelchairs will continue to ride down the middle of the road, as nobody will be there to shovel the sidewalks for them to use!

These photos made me very sad, but in a good way. I think they are very symbolic of our country at this time.

This is TRULY worth publication, it touched my heart on many levels. I lived on Blaine and Woodward for 7 years Livernois and the Davison/Dexter area for another 7 and the next 8 in the Schoolcraft/Greenfield area before i left for college in Raleigh. out of those 22 years, there has been good times and bad, the good provided for an abundance of wonderful memories like my mother (God bless her) who never had much but always managed to do stuff like take me and my sister to the Michigan State Fair or the TasteFest, or even the crowded Freedom Fest at Hart Plaza. Even the bad helped me to discover my creative outlet in many ways then I could imagine. I owe alot to Detroit, and I always will...Thanx for helping me to remember where my heart is...Home

@ Joe - you are so right! Downtown has so many wonderful things going on. But the real trick is to find a genuinely workable way to build and expand on those areas. I mean, it was very difficult for Sean and I to see how you could get people on a larger scale to commit to making even downtown their home when there were virtually no foundation-type businesses that would allow people to take the chance on the city. There were virtually no shops, grocery stores, rite-aid type drug stores, etc. that people would need nearby in order to commit to making their home there.

And further, without somehow stabilizing the neighborhoods you will likely loose ground on progress made in the downtown area. Neighborhoods will always be the life-blood of a city.

Now, don't get me wrong. In a strange way, this trip has only increased my passion and love for Detroit. It's beauty as well as it's potential is all there. The people were truly wonderful!
But I do live in another major city. And that enables me to objectively see just how much work must happen to bring Detroit back to being a fully vibrant city.

Thanks Dawn. We went by your old place also. The house that we had all those memories in growing up is gone. It is an empty lot :\ Although the house at the end of the block where all those guys lived who would steal stuff from their neighbors and sell it on their front lawn..... that one is still up and running. So is life I guess.

What is most sad to me is what the children growing up in this area are exposed to every day. Like you said about the club- what a great, positive, energetic message. But they are receiving that message for a few hours a day and the majority of their life is surrounded by sights of devastation and hopelessness. How can they believe there is anything different or better in their future? And where do we even begin to make the changes? It takes someone smarter and more insightful than me to come up with these answers...

I think it was wonderful Sean. I believe that you caught the heart of the city and what it meant for you and for all of us to grow up in Detroit.

The hard thing to do is to see what is positive around the area. Little by little we can get there. Midtown and Corktown are starting to become very interesting. New buildings to live in as well as new businesses and dining. I hope you post some more shots. Nice job.
