Say what you may about hip-hop and the negativity you think it may embrace but when it came to demonizing crack cocaine and promoting safe sex through condom use there is no other musical subculture that kicked it to the curb. Hip-Hop made sure that you were looked at like a dumb-ass if you didn’t wear a condom and a complete asshole if you smoked crack. Hip-Hop embraced a primal creative release that has since run unparalleled in its impact on a poverty stricken culture.

The wife of photographer Dr. Mohamed Babu accidentally spilled some milk outside their home in South India. Ants quickly gathered to sip on some of the spillage when she noticed their bellies turning white. Once Dr. Babu took a look at the buggers transparent bellies filling with milk he caught a rock solid idea. Check out these incredible photos staged in the family’s backyard. By combining food coloring with a paraffin base the drops were able to hold form while being devoured by the ant mob. Take a close look and you’ll notice some of the ants have secondary colors in their belly from partaking in more than one color. The only remaining question is why Purple Cow flavored ice cream from Meijers used to make my poop turn green. What gives Meijers?

Look, we’re human beings……and we are weird as fuck. What a beautiful universe that would produce a creature capable of taking a piece of toast and meticulously simulating bread mold by needlepoint. Most living creatures of this planet take action based on survival, reproduction or a titillating mix of both. We twist the top off an Oreo and carve reproductions of classic Roman portraiture. This is who we are. We’ll cross-stitch a sexy-time whip on a grid of Chex Corn mix with a cryptic war message and call it a damn day. To be fair, I am using the term “we” extremely loosely when describing “our” collectively peculiar behavior. When I say “we” I am directly referring to eclectic Massachusetts based artist Judith G. Klausner in these wonderfully executed instances. It brings me great comfort to know that there is someone on this planet putting in the incredibly concentrated drudgery of creating a custom wardrobe and miniature stage setting for a murderous praying mantis queen about to lay it down on her lowly mantis subjects. What a wonderful world.

What’s good, good people. I have been on a full sprint for the past month or so. Full on, high steppin’, walk on water sprint-job. Needless to say that when you are trying to stay afloat by running on water you can’t really carry a load. All peripherals fall wayward, the blood leaves your extremities and actively supports your core. There is a strange satisfaction I get from setting goals, achieving them and starting anew. I believe that is the base currency of my happiness in life. These goals are not always professional or project oriented. Often times they are more relationship-facing or parental. Either way I feel certain that the trick to getting by with a reliable smile on your face is by challenging and achieving.

Similar to dancing, hustling hard and running full speed can leave you looking physically ridiculous to a spectator. When your eyes are transfixed on the prize it is sometimes hard to notice that your arms are flailing about. That being said I am going to propose a new slang term for when we are on our extreme hustle. The next time I am juggling three or four projects and training for a half marathon I am going to say “I’ve gone Basset Hound“. Why? See below.

“He’s a pretty serious guy but once you get to know him, he’s a real kid at heart“. You ever take the time to think about what the hell being a kid at heart actually means? It seems the phrase is tossed into the description of someone like a consolation prize for being pretty dickish. Besides, the heart is where all our painful and powerful yearning takes place whereas our brain is where all our hair-brained, risk-taking, double-rainbow appreciating takes place. So what good is being young at heart when your mind and body is toiling away and being a dickish grown-up yearning to see the world through young eyes again? I say if your going to commit to full maturation and trade in your big wheel of the imagination for the highest rated ergonomic office desk chair of the rest of your life then good riddance. The rest of us will grow old in the yearning and be forever young in the mind.

Speaking of young of the mind, check out this incredibly funny photo set by art director Florian Schmucker, photographer Paul Ripke, and producer called POP where the heads of parents and their kids are swapped. Take note that the project paid special attention to flipping the proportions of the head to body size ratio. I could write a whole post about my bewilderment of the size of a baby’s head compared to its body. A newborn baby comes out with a head that is 25% of its height!!! A three year old’s dome is  95% of their fully grown adult diameter!!! Badabooooooom!

My Mom posted a link to an article on CNN that was written by a Dad who detailed, “Why I’m raising my son to be a nerd“. At a glance I thought this guy had the same approach to parenting as I did which got me all giddy for a minute. The author is clearly a good Dad with a hearty conviction for celebrating good grades and academic achievement. I did however take issue with his alignment of “good grades” with “nerdiness”. Let’s get things straight here. Kids who get good grades are bright, capable and sometimes quite talented…. but not necessarily nerds.

My parental approach to schooling is that good grades are the norm. They are not to be celebrated like a touchdown. They are the baseline, the expectation. So, if good grades aren’t involved in “nerdiness”, what do I mean by “I’m going to raise my daughters to be nerds”? I’m referring to the social aspect of nerdiness. The art club, indulging in creative expression, challenging the expectations of society, intimately investigating the uncharted, exploring their colorful uniqueness without the shame of ‘fitting in’. Grades may measure scholastic aptitude but they do not measure the the character of their cultural identity. And in the end it is the creative, cultural and relationship-oriented challenges that define how much we enjoy our time on this earth.

Nerds are loyal. Nerds are creative. Nerds tackle passion and skillfully watch it evolve. Nerds have amazing, life-long friends. Nerds define the shape of their own slot. Peel back the PR saturated, heavily marketing-influenced facade of almost every successful person (musicians, businessman, artists, entrepeneurs, etc) and you will find a hardcore nerd. Ironically, nerdiness is cool as all-hell!

Even though I will expect good grades as the baseline, when all is said and done, grades are just grades. Tackling passion is happiness. And happiness is the whole point of this crazy thing, right?

Everyone talks about how “dialed-in” we are as a culture and how increasingly difficult it is to “unplug”. As technology has evolved it is always the “next big thing” that will be the undoing of life as we know it rendering the old ways irrelevant. Each new development being demonized by the paternal attachments to the innovations that defined the generation previous. I consider myself someone who is extremely plugged-in. Between my time spent online, checking emails, social networking, text messaging, checking-in, researching, blogging, reading feeds, managing my calendar AGHHHH! It’s a lot. It is amazing how heavy a digital existence can feel. 

I went to the Outer Banks last week with the family and my phone got terrible reception. It was beautiful. You know what filled the void? A book. Yep, with a spine, paper pages and everything.  It was beautiful.

Now don’t get me wrong, I have no issue with technology or the submersion of our contemporary culture into the many social networks that have acted as foster friendships for the hustlers. It just feels good to cut off and chill out.

Since we are speaking about the ubiquitous advancement of digital media I figure it’s a good opportunity to share this incredible site “Dear Photograph“. This incredibly endearing site allows people to assemble printed photos from the past and hybrid them with the modern day scenery. The concept is cool but it is sealed with a kiss by tagging each photo with a short message to our photos past. I love it. Check it out.

I am very excited to get back to the city the still pulls me in like a bad relationship. I miss New York terribly and Brooklyn in particular. Life is hard and can be incredibly unfair. Bound to the dirt of this earth by gravity, our troubles seem to drag around behind us like rusty tin cans tied to strings around our feet. No matter how fast or how far you run the rambling noise of your troubles will persevere. The only way to properly move forward is to stop, sit down and pay the proper attention to the complexities of the knots. With a delicate touch and white-knuckle focus each binding wind needs to be unwound. It is quite hard for us to pay this kind of attention to the things that anchor us down. Our species are adapters. As long as we face away from the problem and adapt to the constant ‘clanking’ that our troubles make we feel like progress is being made. But this is not progress and we are not meant to be a vessel for negativity. It is high time to pay intimate attention to the negativity that we carry with us and address it honestly. Only then will we be able to lift up from the confines of this world and fly.

I try to ride the line when curating content for my blog balancing the intriguing with the digestible. Every now and then I uncover a project that runs a bit unsettling. This is one of them. Artist collective Dorothy created a project speaking on the devastating psychological effects that war has on soldiers returning from the horrors of the battlefield. Quoting from their site: “The hell of war comes home. In July 2009 Colorado Springs Gazettea published a two-part series entitled “Casualties of War”. The articles focused on a single battalion based at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, who since returning from duty in Iraq had been involved in brawls, beatings, rapes, drunk driving, drug deals, domestic violence, shootings, stabbings, kidnapping and suicides. Returning soldiers were committing murder at a rate 20 times greater than other young American males. A seperate investiagtion into the high suicide rate among veterans published in the New York Times in October 2010 revealed that three times as many California veterans and active service members were dying soon after returning home than those being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. We hear little about the personal hell soldiers live through after returning home.”

Whether you like it or not, we as creative people are a community and when one of our soldiers falls in the line of battle we have an obligation to band together and take particular observation and show remembrance for someone who gave his life to the honest art of telling the genuine story.

As many of you may already know, Chris Hondros, a Getty photography who specialized in capturing the most extreme human experiences, was killed by a rocket propelled grenade while covering the Libyan rebellion. It is important for us to completely understand the kind of risk and ultimate sacrifice a member of our creative community has willfully committed himself to in the name of photography and the integrity of well composed communication. War photographers are an extremely rare breed. The levels of compositional skill, technical ability, balls of steel and ethical integrity are astronomical. Loosing one as talented as Chris is a devastating blow. Please take some time to check out the two links below that detail his work as well as his life. And make sure that as the countless battles and wars the we declare and enact against one another unfold that we take the time to not only honor the brave soldiers that risk their lives with weapons in hand but also the unarmed, abundantly brave photographers and writers that risk theirs to tell the story.

I never understood why hotel rooms have notoriously bad artwork hung in their rooms. I mean, they have to pay for the art either way and there isn’t really a market for people who like shitty art anyway. It is aesthetic half-steppin’ at its worst. Enter the “Secret Wall Tattoo” movement reportedly started by Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme. The concept is as simple as it is crushing.

Step 1. Rent hotel room for a weekend of drunken debauchery.

Step 2. Remove shit art from hotel wall.

Step 3. Create new art within the boundaries created by shit art.

Step 4. Replace shit art and bid the new secret gallery adieu.

Step 5. Repeat.

Can’t help but love this concept, right? The idea isn’t limited to wall art. Basically anything that can be removed and replaced that will conceal the new artwork. You know you will checking every hotel room from here on out hoping for that secret gem…… or maybe you will drum up the courage to make one yourself. Go for it. We’ll leave the light on for you.

The year is 1718 and you have just celebrated your 23rd birthday on the main deck of Queen Anne’s Revenge. You have been living in your parents clay hovel rent-free with the agreement that you would help fix the thatched roof over the summer. Needless to say you spent the majority of your days recovering from long nights drinking ginger beer and imported bourbon while your nights were choc-full-o karaoke night at the local tavern singing “Soldier, Soldier Will You Marry Me“. Before you knew it, your folks have thrown you out and your only option was joining up with Blackbeard to get your plunder on. After nine month at sea you start noticing some nasty wounds opening up on your belly and your teeth start falling out. Bed-ridden to your swinging hammock in the cargo hold you need medical attention and you need it quick. Luckily for you the last ship you plundered in St. Lucia had a Barber-Chirurgeon (Barber Surgeon) that you took captive. Lucky for the Barber-Chirurgeon part of the bounty you scored in Antigua included a collection of anatomical flap books for his reference. Subsequently, it is unfortunate for you that almost every illness in the 1700′s is treated by bloodletting, leeching and amputation. Not to worry though, the anatomical flip books will provide you with hours of entertainment as the Barber-Chirurgeon gives you a quick trim before mysteriously slipping you an out-of-time-and-space piece of Halls Defense with Vitamic C miraculously curing your undiagnosed case of scurvy while simultaneously condemning this mysterious time traveler to the condemnation of practicing witchcraft and black magic.

Fast-forward 293 years to the present day in the Duke University Library where they are going to be featuring a lineage of the (preposterously prefaced) Anatomical Flap Books. These dynamically rendered and fascinatingly intricate printed texts and illustrations acted as a surgical assistant allowing early medical practitioners to partake in virtual autopsies by meticulously flipping through the anatomy of the illustrated body. This collection dates back to the 1500′s and will be on display in the Perkins Gallery within the Perkins Library at Duke University from April to July 2011. With Libya in complete turmoil and strife it has become immensely dangerous for reporters and journalists to properly document the activities as they unfold. Gaddafi and his loyalists have been openly targeting members of the media with four New York Times journalists missing, a prominent citizen-journalist and an Al-Jazeera cameraman killed while documenting the unfolding events in Libya. The mobile technology company Condition One has developed mobile video tech that appears to be able to travel with the Libyan rebel front lines and can be controlled remotely. Check out this video from photojournalist Patrick Chauvel that partially exhibits the capabilities of this technology. The website doesn’t seem to explain the full capabilities of the technology but the video opens us up to the emotional, chaotic and deadly world that the Libyan rebels are engaged in. Give me freedom or give me death. Take a look.

I’ve seen a lot of startling work created with a lot of outrageous materials but from time to time even I get rattled. I’ve sat on this story for a few days unable to clearly classify my feelings about this project so understand that this one is particularly unsettling.

When people agree to donate their bodies to be used for scientific research or medical use an ethical line is created that begins to heavily blur when an art project become the by-product of the research. The traveling exhibition, Bodies was the first to create a worldwide dialogue on the creative use, or misuse of human cadavers. The scope, scale and perceived integrity of the Bodies project seem to persevere over the ethical uproar. What happens when the project is smaller in scale and is created using public data post-scientific resolve?

Check out Project 12:31. Joseph Paul Jernigan, convicted and sentenced to death for murdering a 75 year old man during a botched robbery, agreed to donate his body to scientific and medical research post execution. His cadaver was sent to the Visible Human Project where it was cross-sectioned into 1,871 single millimeter slices and photographed in order to facilitate anatomy visualization applications. These slices were then run through an animation illuminating the internal images from head to toe. (see video below) Photographer Frank Schott and art director Croix Gagnon created a process that involved playing the video of the cross-sectioned body on a laptop at night and recording the video using night photography. By moving the laptop as the animation played and leveraging abnormally long exposures they were able to recreate the body of Joseph Jernigan in an incredibly haunting and disturbing ethereal form. I’ve never seen anything like this and it has been a while since an art-based project has swam around in so many parts of my mind for so long.

Obviously this project is loaded with ethical and social concerns. Issues including but not limited to capital punishment, murder, manipulation of prisoners, the reliability of our judicial system, ethical treatment of cadavers donated to science, and life after death are sure to charge through the social discourse around Project 12:31. Irregardless of our opinion on this project, I do sincerely believe that one of the primary purposes of art in culture is to create this discourse and provide sustenance for debate, engagement and cultural momentum which thereby assists in the evolution of our species. That may be a little heavy for the controversial use of scientific information regarding the human body but it has me buggin’ hard on it.  What do you guys think?

The flood water that wreaked havoc on the Pakistani population in the 2010 flood destroyed millions of hectares of crops, killed thousands, stranded hundreds of thousands and rampantly spread homelessness and disease across the country. The flood waters have receded for the most part but life is slow to get back to functional. One of the bizarre byproducts of this devastating change in the landscape has been the unexpected migration of millions of spiders into the trees of Sindh, Pakistan. These spiders have taken residence and have effectively cocooned the trees in a ecological phenomenon unseen before in this area. Subsequently, these spider trees have been a mosquito bug trap removing the pesky insect from creating even more havoc in the region by spawning in the stagnant water and spreading malaria. I find it absolutely amazing how life in all forms adapts to a rapidly changing world. Spider trees. Pretty crazy right there.

Hello family, friends and fans….. and any mix therein. Good to link with you as always. So, I am doing something crazy this Saturday. I have decided to fly out to beautiful Napa Valley with members of my old crew from West Philly to run a half-marathon. Now, I’m not a super-fit guy…. and let’s be real, I’m not even a regular-fit guy. Irregardless I have committed and am doing the damn thing. Some may say, “Sean, shouldn’t you be able to run 10 – 13 miles before you fly out there and break your ass in half?” and my reply would simply be, “um, probably”…. but when has the seemingly impossible stopped me before? (not including that roof I plummeted off of in ’02)

I rep Detroit hard and this situation is no different. As I am running my ass off I will be attempting to raise money for my old neighborhood Boys & Girls Clubs back home in Detroit. I called my connect at the Bloomer Club and asked him about the best method to set up fundraising for the club and he replied, “Well, I’m not sure. Nobody has ever asked me that.” I find that hard to believe. Matter of fact, I’m just going to choose not to believe that considering that I’m certain that I’m not the only kid to come up through those ranks with the skills and drive to organize ways of giving back. Guh, anyways.  Some of you may remember the project I began last winter when I traveled back home and interviewed some of the kids who are latch-key kids (as was I) from the club. The project is still in motion and I will keep you looped as it develops. If you missed it, check it out here. The kids are amazing kids. They are worth it.

When we look to predict the future, we can’t help but apply our modern sensibilities to that vision. It is impossible for us to truly predict how outdated and forgotten the staples of present society will be in 100 years. I often wonder if we craft innovation to fit the mold of our commonly accepted aesthetic of how the future should look or is it something much more organic and difficult to truly anticipate. I’m betting the answer is somewhere in the middle. When I look back to the dynamic innovations of our generation I recognize certain aesthetics from movies past. Most of the inventive design trends from Apple seem to have come directly from the living room of Woody Allen in Sleeper. Many of the predictions from Back to the Future 2 came to see the light of day (minus that heartbreakingly elusive hover-board) and Mars definitely needs women. My point is that whenever we look into the unknown we can’t help but visualize a manifestation of our present selves. God, technology and the opinion of others all seem to take shape based on our naturally endowed narcissism. Who you lookin’ at?

Check out these brilliant illustrations from 1911 that depict modern society in the year 2000. These images couldn’t evidence my point more clearly. Or maybe these guys foresaw an uber-retro-hipster movement that has yet to unleash its fury on our insubstantial society. You never know.

We’ve all been there. It’s late in the day of a continuous seven day work cycle at the Gulag labor camp and you find yourself thinking about the hilarious yet traitorous defector scum, Yakov Smirnoff when you hear someone screaming from underneth the plank you are balanced precariously on… “Не наступайте на что рыбы, которую вы  некомпетентны  член моржа !” (translation: “Don’t step on that fish you incompetent walrus dick !”). And what happens every time? You step on the fish.

Check out these incredibly literal and explicit Soviet workplace safety posters. I mean, if I would have paid closer attention to these posters and less time daydreaming about the Dances of the Cossacks I wouldn’t have kicked that mallet off the 40th story while trying to take a leak. And maybe, just maybe Vladimir wouldn’t have that concave dent in his dome-piece.

The United States is not the only country that has noticed a decline in church service attendance. In some cases the parishioners have dropped to naught and these beautifully crafted places of worship have been left abandoned. Many communities have refurbished the structures to suit community needs but the Netherlands-based architecture firm Zecc Architects have gone another route. Church as home. Check out St. Jakobus in Utrecht. With as little structural interference as possible, Zecc Architects have created an stylized, modern, albeit cold and Sleeper-worthy home-front.

I couldn’t help help but notice the similarities between this cultural commodity custom and our own Black Friday craze. It is amazing to watch…. just as long you aren’t one of them Antogo fishies or a Tickle-me-Elmo.
