Bomber Jacket Bravado

I haven’t been this excited about a find since Sonny Bono discovered that tree. (just a joke Sonny) Flickr user D.Shelley has blessed us with an absolutely incredible photo set detailing the custom artwork applied to the back panel of WWII bomber jackets. Hand-crafted and war-torn, these jackets set the tone for graffiti-adorned jean jackets of the 80′s. These dudes were seriously bombin‘ shit…. no, seriously.

Skull Vomit

Miami graf artist Typoe kills it on the streets both inside and outside the gallery walls. Check out this stand-out piece titled Confetti Death created from a skull and shards of plastic spray-paint caps. Absolutely incredible. I couldn’t dig up an official site for Typoe but click here for his full flickr feed. Enjoy.

The Book Surgeon

Every now and then I cross paths with an artist who had refined a process so intense that it blow the cap off my skull. Check out the absolutely incredible sculpted book-work of Brian Dettmer. It may take you a few moments to orient yourself but once you do you will see one of the most implausibly crafted works of art created from existing material you have ever seen. The process is described quite simply. A book is chosen, nothing is added and only chunks of pages are removed. Once …

Drowning Beautiful

Sometimes an artist creates something so beautifully simple that it takes your breath away…. literally. (hack line – couldn’t help it) Artist Jason de Caires Taylor creates life-size cement sculptures of people and submerges them into the waters of South America. As time passes the sculptures become part of the underwater landscape and slowly become artificial reefs ripe with marine life. The process of experiencing artwork out of a traditional gallery and underwater is described with intimately vivid detail on his site. Absolutely incredible execution merging art, life and the …

The Assassinated Public Figure Playset ®

My generation hasn’t had any significant progressive leaders that have served as role models in the public sphere. I’m pretty sure we can all point to people in our smaller circles that live their life in a manner that you try to live up to. But as far as progressive leadership with a substantial voice in mass media, nada. Michael Moore would be the closest thing to someone who consistently put himself out there to get people thinking, talking and inspiring organization. But at his core he is a movie …

Subway, lifeblood.

As a kid growing up in the eightees’ who naturally gravitated towards GrandMaster Flash, The RockSteady Crew and writing graffiti, I always had an affinity for the New York City subway during the late 70′ and early 80′s. It represented the blood-filled arteries of a city pumping with organic, authentic, city-brewed culture. It was covered with tags and pieces while filled with people of every size, shape, age and color. It was reckless and untamed and most importantly, it was New York City.

Detroit lost.

I grew up in Detroit. Southwest Detroit. I moved to Philly when I was 10 and hadn’t returned to the neighborhood, friends or house that I had left behind. I would visit Detroit a few times a year to visit family but we never went back to the old neighborhood.

STEP by STEP – Piggy Smalls is the Illest!

I have been invited to participate in a fundraiser/silent auction where artists will paint/customize a ceramic pig. The proceeds will go towards the Whole Foods charity “Feed the Farm“. It is sponsored by Whole Foods and the auction will take place at The Pit on March 6th. It took me a day or so for a concept to crystalize but when it did….. oh yea. Ladies and Gentlemen, I will be presenting to you…. the Notorious P.I.G.
Here goes nothing….

STEP by STEP – John Lee Hooker Skate Deck

I have decided to create my deck using a bit of an experimental process. I am going to attempt to fuse some heavy watercolor paper onto the sanded down deck. From there I will render using pencils and watercolor. I will seal it up with a heavy mod podge lacquer. Hopefully I don;t blow the whole thing.
I have settled on doing a portrait of American Blues legend John Lee Hooker. I have been addicted to his “Big Soul of John Lee Hooker” album. If you don’t know it, you need …
