The Uncanny Culture Initiative is gearing up to celebrate their 3rd Anniversary of growing and supporting the creative culture in North Carolina. They are doing it up properly with a 3D themed showcase featuring roughly 50 artists freaking it in the third dimension. If you are anywhere near Charlotte this Saturday you need to make like a fetus and head out to AKA Creative.

My submission is a nod to the man Billy Dee Williams and his smooth, seductive and awkwardly sexual support Colt 45 Malt Liquor. If there was ever a man who could convince me to drink 40 ounces of liquid libido, Lando Calrissean is the pusher. You the man though, Lando.

My good friend, artist and all-around great guy Robert King recently received the terrible news that the brain tumor he had removed 7 years ago has returned and this time it is inoperable. Chemo did not take and new treatments are under way. Second opinions, medical, travel, and dietary costs are completely overwhelming so we are banding together to raise money to help our good friend in this fight.

Robert will be showcasing a set of his paintings in his striking, mixed media, adventurous style. If you are unfamiliar with his work you should make sure and make Lillys your first stop on your First Friday run-a-round.

PBR has stormed the art & culture scene in Raleigh over the past few years leaving a trail of wet paint, empty cans and foggy memories about what exactly happened the night before. Their annual PBArt Show is set to pop-off, foam up and potentially make you pee this evening at the Design Box. With live music, a deep talent pool and affordable artwork, you don’t want to be the one left clearly remembering what happened the night before.

It’s a sad fact that galleries close somewhat early. Even the PBArt show is going to be winding down around 11. The creative class of Raleigh finally has a cool spot that exists somewhere between a bar, lounge and house party. With sketchbooks abound, bboys breaking, live painting outside from Matt Scofield and Sean Kernick, Sami Automatic on the wheels and Mic Savvy tossing words, there is no better way to close out First Friday. The inaugural “Wrong Side” event was such a fun and positive event that we decided to roll out another. We are proud to announce the urban, gritty artwork of Durhams own Vanilla Gorilla will be featured throughout the month of March with an opening on First Friday, March 4th from 7pm to 10pm at The Union Tavern.

Each First Friday Two Four Flinching will be hosting a curated show featuring our favorite creative hustlers both new and established at The Union Tavern. The art show opening will run from 7pm-10pm but you know we don’t stop the party there….

The Charlotte-based powerhouse “Culture Initiative” invited me to participate in a group art show/ dance party/ cultural happening titled “Epic Proportions“. Each artist was tasked with getting loose on a 6ft x 3ft canvas. These pieces will be showcased amongst a venue thumping dance party headlined by Treasure Fingers. In other words, this event will be hotter than a goats ass in a pepper patch! If you are in the Charlotte area you can’t miss this one.

So who else should I paint when I’m thinking of epic proportions than Rodney “Easy Money” Dangerfield. Smoking, overeating, gambling, booze and boobs! The man was a comic genius and the proportions were epic my friend. Since I was working with a 6ft canvas I figured I may as well hook up a slightly-larger-than-life-size portrait of Rodney. Blue, crude and one cool-ass dude – I show my respect Mr. Dangerfield.

Teaching Young Nooch the fine art of wheat-paste with a dash of Bill Cosby appreciation.

There is less than a week before the NC Comicon opens its doors to the public. Make sure you come through and check out the action on November 13th and 14th at the Morrisville Outlet Mall. There is a rock solid list of professional talent that will be signing autographs, a load of family friendly events and a collection of local artists, vendors and collectors. Wow. The show was amazing. The art, the executions, the vibe, the people, the community….. Raleigh was on it on October 8th. I can’t thank people enough for all the effort with organizing, participating in and supporting the event! Makes me proud to be living and painting in Raleigh.

With the soon-to-be legendary “DRUNK Illustrated” rounding the bend (only 8 more days), I wanted to drop another preview post. Part of the show is dedicated to the strangely addictive and often ugly side of legendary drinkers in our celebrity culture.

Let’s check out two from the list. Andre the Giant and Judy Garland.

Modern Drunkard details that “it has been estimated that Andre the Giant drank 7,000 calories worth of booze every day.” Holy shit. Any of you think you know how to throw a few beers back? You are nothing. Check this out (also from Modern Drunkard)“You won’t find it in the Guinness Book of World Records, but Andre the Giant holds the world record for the largest number of beers consumed in a single sitting. These were standard 12-ounce bottles of beer, nothing fancy, but during a six-hour period Andre drank 119 of them. It was one of the few times Andre got drunk enough to pass out, which he did in a hallway at his hotel.” Yea, 119.

Judy Garland struggled terribly with alcohol and drugs  through her later years and it ultimately was the cause of her cirrhosis of the liver and death from what was reported to be “an incautious self-overdosage” of barbiturates. She made numerous live performances  being heavily intoxicated while slurring interviews and nearly passing out at concerts. An awfully sad path for someone who was able to play characters that inspired such hope and color for countless generations.

There is nothing funny or amusing about how alcohol can systematically dismantle the people who struggle with its aggressively addictive nature. For every legendary Andre the Giant story there are countless stories with heart wrenching consequences. Love it. Hate it. It is here to stay either way.

Ben Franklin once said, “There can’t be good living where there is not good drinking.” I find that quote highly debatable and slightly ironic. Sure, most of my best stories begin with “I was so wasted this one time that….” but for each legendary story I have compiled I am plagued with 50 liver-soaked, hang-over ridden, bruise bearing all-nighters that have probably shaved a considerably slice off the lifespan.

It is this dichotomy that I have chosen to explore for my first solo show, “DRUNK Illustrated”. I will be detailing my rancid, adventurous and mayhem ridden drinking stories as well as a collection of gems from friends and family. Each colorful story will be hand-painted and illustrated on a full 40oz bottle of bottle of Old English malt liquor while slowly rotating on bottom lit, revolving display platforms.

Drunken pink elephant style. Juxtaposing these stories with a cartoonish, colorful execution and displaying on rotating platform will illustrate the adictive, engaging and dizzying power that alcohol possesses over some of us.

A set of custom painted bottles will also feature portraits from a collection of the worlds greatest drinkers, happy & sad. These will feature Edgar Allen Poe, Andre the Giant, Ben Franklin, John Daly, and Judy Garland.

Come early, thirsty and prepared to share your greatest drinking stories. I know you have one or two that you wish you could forget.

My generation hasn’t had any significant progressive leaders that have served as role models in the public sphere. I’m pretty sure we can all point to people in our smaller circles that live their life in a manner that you try to live up to. But as far as progressive leadership with a substantial voice in mass media, nada. Michael Moore would be the closest thing to someone who consistently put himself out there to get people thinking, talking and inspiring organization. But at his core he is a movie maker. Not a leader.

My generation grew up in the era where Rambo, The Terminator and the World Wrestling Federation dominated our eyes and ears and in the process we became more intimately acquainted with guns, ammunition and violence than we did with any sort of progressive thinking or leadership on a large scale. The dominant leaders from our history who began to successfully organize the people with a broad, accelerated, positive structure were taken down by the same bullet that dominates our popular culture and threatens to completely pollute the next generation.

Enter The Assassinated Public Figure Playset!

What better way to teach the next generation about the progressive, peaceful leadership who gave their lives to senseless violence in their prime than by picking up the Playset at your local Wal-Mart, Target or K-Mart and break it out on family game night.

Too much? Maybe. You get what I’m trying to say here.

This piece will be shown in the “My Uzi Weighs a Ton“, guns & pop culture – art show at the Neon Forest Gallery in Orlando. I chose to depict Abraham Lincoln, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., John Lennon, Mahatma Gandhi, John F. Kennedy and Malcolm X. Each person is hand painted on a .50 caliber (non-firing) round. This is the largest bullet a citizen of the USA can purchase. No permit necessary. I found it overwhelmingly troubling that it was easier to buy a bullet that could kill from over a mile away than it was to come up with a relevant, progressive thinking leader that is accessible to our next generation. (although I still have hope) Let’s do the damn thing.

It is our goal to help fund this non-profit so that it is prepared to deal with the effects of the BP oil spill on the NC coastline.

Pabst Blue Ribbon will be sponsoring a rough and tumble, beer flavored art show called “The PBart Show” in Raleigh during the Cherry Bounce Festival on July 29th. Artists were encouraged to create PBR inspired artwork so I took it quite literal and create a few custom painted, full, unopened 22oz tall boys. I built the theme around the concept that “PBR brews very strange company”. This was my first crack at customizing beer cans and I think I have stumbled into an arena that I am going to be playing in for a little while.

The first ‘bird in the ole’ A-hole’ that was created for the “Letters” show at the Lodi Project had sold at the opening. I know, the wordplay is endless…… Yes, my A-hole is hanging above the mantle someones house right now. The show was such a success that it is going to be traveling to Greensboro, NC. One problem. No A-hole.

Enter “There’s A Bird in My A-hole 2.0″. It’s a little more rugged and messy…. but when your in the business of putting birds in your a-hole, it only gets messier.

Some of you may have noticed that the solo show I had been planning has recently been converted into a group show. Life happened and I needed to reach out to my crew for a hand up on this one. It is shaping up to be a kick-ass show no doubt. The showing will be created using a clean layout and Freight themed visuals such as model freight trains and drawn cranes at the dockyard. We got hot cargo ready to unload people! Let’s hook it up!

Matt Scofield, Victor Knight, Greg Davis and myself hooked up a show at the LabourLove gallery last year where we painted a set of panels in the gallery and pulled off a very cool show. We were approached by Kelly and John of LabourLove about showing the panels for a showing at the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC). I love that building, inside and out. I was thrilled. So thrilled that I felt compelled to redo that panels completely. I was never really very happy with how my panels came out for the LabourLove show and rarely do you get an opportunity to pull off a “redo” in the art world.

The panels will hang in the windows so the back will face out towards the street. So, not only was I planning on repainting the original panels, I was going to hook up both sides. I decided to go with the big four of NC jazz musicians, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Nina Simone and Max Roach. Carolina knows how to make em.

I was approached by the Chair of the Art Procurement committee for Appetite for Art which is an annual auction gala that will support arts programming for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County. She wanted to know if I had any artwork that I would be willing to donate for the event. After thinking and debating on what would do well, I figured “screw it, I’m doing something fresh”.

Growing up I was a huge fan of Catcher in the Rye. Like most kids, I connected on an intimate level with Holden. Really, that is the only book could read over and over. After hearing the news of Salingers’ passing I knew I had to do a tribute. This will be good.

I used the actual pages from Catcher in the Rye book as torn paper texture to create a slightly chaotic energy. I also wanted to express how deeply JD fell into the lonely, chaotic world of fame revolving around the success of this book. His words came to define him as much as his life spent as a recluse. When you think of Mr. Salinger, you think of his words and his difficulty separating his identity from the success of his storytelling. A broken man trying to hold it together in a chaotic world.  Interesting guy, no question.

The gala is on April 10th, 2010. I will keep you guys posted as the event info rolls out.Hope to see you guys there.

Hard to really know what to say about the show. A few things are certain.

Anyways, all in all it was a success. I would like to say to the 20 or so people who bolted once the ‘rastle in the castle started, that was extremely uncommon. Ah well. Here goes….

A few years ago I was walking through a parking lot in a strip mall. I looked up at the signage above one of the storefronts and noticed that a bird had nested in the recessed portion of a letter A. My pupils dialated, a smirk was crafted and an idea was born….. “There was a bird in that A-hole!”.

Years pass but that idea was such a little gem that I kept it on my low shelf. Easy to reach. Then one day I get an invitation to participate in a show at the Lodi Project that will showcase Raleigh artists, each creating one letter out of the alphabet. I raced to secure the A. I got it secured. The time has come…… my A-hole will see the light of day.

I decided to create a 3-dimensional representation. I figured an A that was slightly human with a stylized bird in a nest was the route.  Some of you may know I have a strange repulsion to birds nests in general. I find them incredibly creepy and gross. They remind me of the inside of a bone or something. Plus, when you really look at a nest, it freaks me out to see what the hell these birds are up to with all this random refuse. Yea, I dont know. Anyway, I used this project to push my way through some of that fear. I got an old nest from one of the bird houses in the yard and used some of the actual nest to create the nest in the sculpture. It was a bit messy but I feel better about things now. Weirdo.

Since this sculpture hinges on a punchline I wanted to create something that would be funny but not overtly obvious. A slight puckering of the negative space should suffice. I initially had planned on having the A sit on a shelf but once I saw that everyone else had workd from a 12″ x 12″ base, I knew I had to quickly rethink things. With the help of some friends (Thanks Mike) I was able to pull together a new boxframe/shelf. I painted it at lunch and it was hung by evening.

The show is going to be first class. It is at the Lodi Project which is a beautifully cool gallery where I got a little preview and the work is awesome. 26 of the cream of the Raleigh litter killing these letters. Everyone looks like they showed up. The artists run down is as follows:

Rediculous right? And this is the show thats in the Orchestra area. The larger gallery will host a show primarily focused on the use of typography in a variety of mediums. It will be curated by Scott McClure who will also be taking part in an installation in the lobby gallery with horticultural stylist Erin Weston, and photographer Tim Lytvinenko.

Let’s do the damn thing.

My good buddy Matt Scofield scouted this well placed feature in this weeks Indy. Big and brazen, one of my favorite pieces of the show was a good surprise to see in the paper no doubt. The documentary is being finished up and I will make an announcement when the premiere event gets scheduled. Looking forward to it.

The open house was a lot of fun no question. I didnt really know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised at the turn-out, the positive feedback and the new connections that were sealed. One of the oddest things about working out of a creative collective is the fact that 99% of the time I don’t see any of the other artists. Granted, my schedule is downright unhealthy so it isn’t that odd that I wouldn;t see anyone else working at 3am so it was great to meet and see everyone

involved. Looking forward to the next one and this time we will be more than prepared.

The amazing Rob and Lisa King have been working hard on the documentary based on the collaborative art project “3 the Hard Way”. The project is coming to a close in the next few weeks which is a little bittersweet. It is coming together very nicely and is sure to be a highly engaging show. The trailer for the documentary has been sent to press and looks fantastic. I look and touch a touch smarmy but maybe thats because I have a bad smarmy complex.

The dysfunctionally functional Bonded Llama family are opening the doors to their humble abode to showcase our artwork as well as our workspaces. Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-lost to me. We lift our lamp beside the Bonded Llama door!

Not that I am drawing clear parallels between the revolutionary American icon The Statue of Liberty but our torch does burn bright and we are kind of floating out in an island oasis of warehouses and freight train layups. We are also a motley crew of dedicated artists with an array of talents guaranteed to juxtapose comfortably and could quite possibly make your nipples hard….. or not. No pressure.

I was invited by the great Georges Le Chevallier and preeminent Paul Friedrich to participate  in a three man art show entitled “3 the Hard Way”. The concept behind the show goes like this:

Each artsist will start will three pieces. A 3×3, a 2×2 and  a 1×1. The medium and materials is of the artists choosing. Once the three pieces have been prepared and painted on, there will be an exchange and each artist will trade out the work he has for a set of the other artists. We will have a month or so to work on those three and then another exchange will occur. It will be interesting to see how three artists with completely different backgrounds, processes and styles come together to make solid pieces of artwork. An added element, which should be cool, will be a documentary crew consisting of Robert and Lisa King from Octave Blue will be filming the entire process. They will also pull the curtain a bit to show what life is like for a hustling artist on the grind.

I can’t do my usual “step-by-step” postings for this show because each artist isn’t to know what the others are doing in detail while the project progresses. I will be able to make some updates though so stay tuned.

The show will be held on first Friday in December at the Lodi Project.

Damn these are late getting posted. The show came off really well. The weather was bad and there was a handful of other events going on at the the same time so the crowd that came was substantial. My sister was in town so I was finally able to show her what kind of work we have been doing. I love my sis. John and Kelly are amazing people who run a first class gallery, create amazing art, and give themselves to the art community in an amazing location. If you haven’t stopped by, you are truly missing out. Labour Love kills it.

If you are in the St Louis area, this is a must-see event. My man Dubelyoo and his right hand Jabari with the help of a Jack Daniels sponsorship hook up the hook up. Fresh artwork, live music, big crowds. It is really what I envision the future of the art scene becoming if it is to stay relevant in popular culture. I have a handful of my favorite pieces traveling in the show and I wish I could make it out to Missouri but life won’t permit that right now. Hopefully I will catch the next one.

Victor Knight inked me up with a true representative for Durham, Artie Barksdale. This guy is the real deal and that relationship that is forming will manufacture a critical bridge between the good work we are trying to do in Raleigh and the big things that are happening in Durham. He is well connected and talented as hell. Alone, Barksdale would kill it, but he is teamed up with the great Derrick Bryant who crushes as well. Barksdale and Derrick are not only planning things out and making them happen but they are both incredibly talented artists. They run a gallery called Red Mass right in the heart of downtown Durham. The space and location are inspiring. This last Saturday I participated in their “Swagga from the Dead” show. All invited artists had to create work that would glow under the shine of a blacklight. I rocked a Michale Jackson Thriller tribute and a Rod Serling portrait created with invisible blacklight paint. Special effects style. The turned all the light low, installed a collection of blacklights, turned on a smoke machine and set the vibe right for an amazing show. It really was more of a “happening” than an art show. We were also blessed with  the poetic talents of a collection of local poets and songbirds. Top to bottom the show was hot.

Afterward the show I took my brother down to AhPeele Gallery for an Afterparty. I’m not sure what came before the “after” but the party was fun as hell. I decided to break out some paint and get loose live during the event. They had some crazy dj crew called The Hood Internet running the music and people seemed to go nuts for them. Like nuts for real. People climbed on the roof, people were jumping on trampolines, one guy castrated himself on stage…..well, 2 out of 3.

Fun night. Closed at the studio. Brother got like 3 hours of sleep before his flight. Well done.

I know I am crazy late with posting these photos but its been a crazy time. This years Sparkcon was kind of fun as hell. They moved it to Fayetteville Street Mall which put it right out there in the middle of a main street that runs right through downtown. Most of the usual suspects showed up with a handful of new faces as well. There is a young scene rising and shaking things up a bit. Good to know that us old-schoolers won’t have to carry the torch all the way down to the filter.

This year I decided to paint a Billie Holiday piece. I went a stylized route with the rendering and drove it home with some wheat pasting of a pattern of flowers that she used to wear in her hair. I was very happy with it and ended up selling it when all was said and done. Very cool.

The arts scene in Raleigh/Durham was one that I hadn’t felt attracted to until we decided to dive head first into it as a unit. There is a collection of artists who I have been painting with in varying degrees of legalities for some time now. The group has grown in size, talent and vision. The group seems to have adopted a name to run with which will be “The Faculty”. Seems catchy and functional enough. We had our first unofficial-official group showing at the AhPeel Gallery and it really came off. It seemed to be a bit of a rough go getting there but in the end, it really cleaned up and looked awesome. All hail Victor Knight. This was his baby and he killed it. Ready for Volume 2.

My final piece for the show is completed. I have been a bit obsessed with Victorian and Elizabethan era explorers and the culture and lifestyle that surrounded them. These guys were half cocked off their asses. The world was an unknown. There was no real policing of any exploratory activities. These mutherfuckers would roll through and wreck shit. Claiming whatever they found as their own. If someone else had what they wanted, they would try and exterminate them. They would steal all kinds of treasures and riches and haul them back to their spot in an old rickety ass ship. No weather technology existed so they would smash through all kinds of storms and sea treachery.

The motivations behind these guys also intrigues the hell out of me. This image is of Sir Francis Drake. This guy had balls of steel and persevered through blind ambition, a heartless soul, and a bounty of fortunate luck. Other guys would pursue these adventures in the name of vanity, greed, tomfoolery….. and each of them was a certified sociopath. Now that the years have passed we sing their praises and take national holidays in their honor…..but don;t get it twisted. These guys were without doubt the original-original gangsters.

Part of the BOMBED show will be a silent auction for these customized shoes that each of us hooked up.  The auction will be benefiting the Helping Hands Missions Shoes 4 Souls campaign. We were initially expecting the shoes to be some sort of white sneaker but when I went to pick them up I was surprised to see sparkling white bridesmaid dress shoes. After a few minutes I decided that this was a better idea anyways. A lot of people have been customizing sneakers but I really haven;t seen too much of this at all. I settled on a black and white palette with an Alice in Wonderland theme. The black ink with diamond pattens retaining the sheen of the shoe made for a good look. I’m pretty happy with these.

I am very excited and proud to be down with the BOMBED show at the LabourLove gallery in the Goldenbelt complex in Durham this Friday the 18th from 6 – 9pm. The show will feature Matt Scofield, Victor Knight, Greg Davis, Franco and myself. We did some live painting in the gallery last weekend which was a paint fume infested good time. I am still picking teal and baby blue boogers. The show will also feature  some digital illustrations, paintings and custom bridesmaid shoes… yep, you heard that right. There will be a shoe drive at the gallery that will be collecting shoes for the Helping Hands Missions Shoes-4-Souls campaign. The custom shoes will be auctioned off to benefit the Mission as well.

You would think that was plenty but we didnt stop there. The show will be blessed with the skills of DJ Paradime and will showcase some breakdancing from members of the Swoon Unit. This should be a “next-level” type of show. Let’s do the damn thing already.
